Car Buying – What is Gap Coverage?

With the prices of cars today going out of sight, it is important to make sure you are protected in the event of an accident. In many cases, your insurance will not pay off your vehicle if it is totaled in an accident. That is why many lenders and dealers will offer you GAP coverage to protect your investment and your credit rating.

What is GAP Coverage?

GAP stands for Guaranteed Auto Protection. It protects YOU in the event of a total loss of your vehicle.

GAP comes into play:

1. If your vehicle is in an accident and is a total loss or is stolen and non-recoverable. This also includes flood, fire, hurricanes, etc.

2. Your insurance will pay the actual cash value of the vehicle (what the vehicle is worth, not what you owe)

3. GAP will pay the remaining amount on the loan plus your insurance deductible.

GAP coverage is designed to protect your investment on a vehicle you are still making payments on. Since a vehicle begins depreciating as soon as you drive it off the dealership lot, GAP coverage is a way to assist in any unforeseen loss that you might not expect. Your insurance company will only protect you for the ACV (actual cash value) of the vehicle. GAP coverage is designed to cover you for the difference between that amount and the amount you owe on the vehicle.

For example:

1. You have a remaining a balance of $8,000 on your loan. (The remaining balance that needs to be paid before you can purchase a new car)

2. You car is totaled and your insurance pays $4,000 for your car (the vehicles ACV),

3. GAP will pay the remaining $4,000 plus your insurance deductible up to $1,000.

4. You are out of pocket NOTHING and can get into a new car faster.

GAP coverage is a small investment on your part but could save you a considerable amount if something were to happen to your vehicle unexpectedly.

You can find out more about GAP coverage and getting a car loan at OpenRoad Lending.

Get Your Hands On A Police Impounded Cars

You don’t have to be a seasoned buyer or bidder to catch a police impounded car. A great amount of people with a small amount of or no experience actually come out of the police auction lot with a nice, road-worthy car that set them back for a few hundred dollars. Police impound cars are not inevitably old, rusty heaps. If you look hard enough, you’ll find one that might just be what you’re seeking.

How to get rolling

First, establish where the auction will be held and when. Local police agencies advertise their used or impound car auctions through newspapers and sites. You might in addition try calling your local police for details.

Arm yourself with enough details. You can’t really know what form of units you’ll be faced with face until you arrive or if you are bidding online, you might not arise close and personal with the impounded cars to judge their value, so better purchase a price guide for used cars like the Kelley blue book. This way you are able to checkout the car’s trade-in value so you don’t overbid.

Remember that you will not be the only one bidding for the impounded cars. There are other people like you, and then there are the pros, who can smell a good deal by simply looking at it. These people know that some really great deals can be had with police impounded cars and they are there to take a slice of the pie.

If you understand cars, then you may be certain enough to go at it by your alone, but if you don’t, best bring someone with you who can be of help to you look under the hood and separate the lemon from the pears, so to speak.

Subscribe to CarFax and bring your laptop or PDA with you so you can check the car’s history. This is not a requisite, but it’s a great idea to help you verify the impounded car’s background.

At the auction

It would be better if you could participate in a live auction yourself as you might actually see and inspect the cars yourself. Since inspection will take time, better arrive early so you’ll have time to investigate the cars and make your selection. Auction lots usually open early, but bidding starts a couple of hours after.

After you pay the nominal registration fee, get your bidder number. You can’t bid if you don’t have one. If you plan to drive the vehicle home just in case you win the bid, then bring your driver’s license, proof of insurance and get a short lived permit. These permits vary depending on your locality, so best check upfront.

Learn what the auction rules are. If you’re familiar with auction lingo, so much the better. Some police impounded cars can be had for no reserve price, which implies you can bid at a reduced price.

Don’t be shy about inspecting the cars or if someone’s available, asking questions. You will not be permitted to start the automobile, far less test-drive it. It’s your finances, so you better be certain you get its worth. Search for scratches, dents and evidence of repairs and flooding. Check the lights, mileage, oils, tires, bumpers and windows. You’re buying an ‘as is, where is’ police impounded car and if by any chance you get junk, you have not everybody to blame but yourself.

Get the impounded car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) and run it through CarFax. You’ll be able to get some very helpful info about its history, including its ownership and any accidents it may have been involved in. This information is a high deciding factor on your behalf. Sometimes you can be eyeing a nice, seemingly good condition car but a run through CarFax will show that it’s been in an unforeseen event and that it just got mended and polished up for auction to look acceptable.

Once bidding starts, be alert to the figures and how much you’re actually willing to pay for. Sometimes, in the heat of the bidding exchange, you could be able to get over excited and pay so more than the car’s market price. Remember that the purpose you came to a police impounded car auction is to get a car at dollars not up to its market price.

After you win the bid, don’t forget about the buyer’s premium which can go from 5 to 15% of the bidding price. A police impounded car you won at a $900 bid will cost you $990 on a 10% buyer’s premium. Plus, you don’t have any warranty on the motor car.

Police impounded cars could be a fantastic source of good to excellent condition used cars, but provided that you go in as an informed buyer. Know the risks involved and get as much information as you can.

Rear drive shaft containment loop: Scribner Welding has the best

Scribner Welding is a high quality, small fabrication and machine shop. It began only because of customer demand, and the love for cars.

I began building my own car parts in the 1960’s while working in various positions.  Draftsman, machinist, and equipment field mechanic. All of which have contributed to the expertise of the craftmanship we create.

Most of my education was in diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical, however, my first love has always been street rods and drag cars.  I was always building an engine or suspension parts for someone in the evenings.  It was quite a “hobby”.

In the 1970’s, I built tooling to narrow 12 bolts, and 9 inch Ford rearends.  In the mid 1980’s, I took a rearend that I had narrowed for my own use, to a swap meet. I was only looking to sell it. To my surprise, there were people all day long, asking questions. Most of them had never seen a TIG welded rearend. There was such extreme interest, and demand, that in January 1990, Scribner Welding was officially a business, specializing in Narrowed Rearends.

Acquiring the distributorship for Aurora Rod Ends in January 1997, we became Scribner Welding and Distributing.

I have more than thirty years experience in TIG welding, and have completed 1300+ narrowed rearends. The specialty continues to be with rearends. Our sheet metal housings have been referred to as  ”works of art”. Due to customer demand, we have also ventured into custom aluminum fabrication, suspension components, and driveshafts. We also deal heavily with axles and all parts pertaining to building rearends, and suspension components.

Scribner Welding is proud to be “the place to go” for fabricated parts and components for your special project. We thrive for customer satisfaction.
